2.7.2 The 'hidden curriculum' and how it affects learners

Welcome to chapter 7 of the 'Policies, pastoral care and practical applications' module. Throughout this module, we have discussed specific policies, laws, moral and ethical obligations and support networks which are in place to support learners in Education. This chapter deals with something a little different: the 'hidden curriculum', which has the potential to disadvantage certain learners through the teaching of unintended lessons. We will define exactly what a hidden curriculum is and explore what the impact of a hidden curriculum may be on different types of learners.

Goals for this section

  • To understand what a hidden curriculum is and to describe how it can affect learners.

Objectives for this section

  • To be able to explain what the hidden curriculum is and what the risks of teaching unintended lessons can be.
  • To be able to identify the benefits and limitations of the hidden curriculum, and critically discuss whether or not it is possible for a hidden curriculum to be a good thing.
  • To consider the ways in which elements of the hidden curriculum may be unintentionally integrated into everyday teaching practice, and how this can be subverted.
